Bokakhat Tourism

Bokakhat is a small town in the Golaghat district of Assam located about 23 kms away from the world heritage Kaziranga National Park. Due to its location to the national park, it is a hub for tourists who come every year to see the famous One-horned rhinoceros of the park. It is spread over 384 sq kms (excluding the Kaziranga National Park). Bokakhat is the headquarters of Bokakhat sub-division under Golaghat district which was created on 23rd March 1992. Bokakhat was earlier known as Namdoiang as it was located far below the river Doiang.

Demography of Bokakhat

According to the 2001 census, Bokakhat had a population of 8844. The average literacy rate is 78% and the population percentage of males to females is 54& to 46%. The population include majority of Assamese along with Assamese, Nepali, Bengali, Bihari, Marwari, Mising, Muslim and the tea garden people.

Economy of Bokakhat

The economy of Bokakhat largely depends on tea cultivation and tourism. Tea cultivation is one of the prime income earners with large area of tea gardens adorning the town. Apart from that, due to its location in the vicinity of Kaziranga National Park, there are many tourists who come to this place for lodging. As such, tourism is another source of income.

The prime tourist location is the Kaziranga National Park located 23 kms away from Bokakhat. Apart from that, the Kakochang waterfall is an important picnic spot and is situated about 13 kms away from Bokakhat. Along with this, the other attractions include the Numaligarh Refinery, Butterfly Park and tea gardens of Methoni, Behora, Borsapori and Hatikhuli etc.
